Chapter Fifteen

Unable to settle into his full day’s workload, Johnny drove past Audra’s house to see her uncle’s car in the driveway. His foot hit the gas pedal, and he kept going. No way would he interrupt what could be a very emotional day for Audra and possibly James.

He prayed that Ken didn’t question her about James’s parentage. He had no idea how she would reply, and he figured they’d both have to be on the same page to fool the older couple.

Not that they had any more rights to the boy than his grandparents did. After he found out he was a daddy, he’d talked to Carl Wyman, his favorite employer, about the situation and got some lawyerly advice. The old man might not practice anymore, but he’d been an attorney for many years. Of course, that was before coming into a huge inheritance, which included the mansion Johnny had worked so hard to bring to life.

According to Wyman, as long as Johnny had proof that James was his, he’d get custody in any courtroom. Which meant, Johnny needed to get a hold of James’s birth certificate and pray that Cari had listed him as the father.

Carl had even suggested that Johnny get a DNA test done so he’d have the paper in case something came up to question his validity. He’d meant to do so but never seemed to have the time. Just knowing he had that option gave him a sense of relief. Those results would immediately silence any questions about James’s heritage or anyone else laying claim to the boy.

Suddenly, a face popped into his mind, one that had haunted him since the night before, and his heartbeats quickened. This morning, Audra had been beautiful in her surprise and happiness. He’d stored those precious moments like a snapshot he’d never be able to forget. A mother and son reclaiming each other.

Shit! Where did that leave him? Johnny wasn’t heartless or cruel. He didn’t want revenge anymore, not like he’d felt after those first few days when he’d found out about James. He just wanted the best for his kid. As much as he understood that fatherhood was important, he had to accept that at three years of age, the youngster needed his mommy.

Arriving at the office, he ignored his father’s whining about him being late and settled into the discussion they were having about all the work that had been lined up and how they would handle each job.

An hour after lunchtime, he’d had enough. His father had left earlier, leaving the boys to make the final decisions. “Calvin, you wanna grab a bite? I’m starving.”

“Nah, I bought lunch on the way to the office this morning. I’ll hang in here and get some of the requisitions sent out.”

“You haven’t done them yet? I thought we talked about that. You can’t kee—”

“I know. I’ve heard it all before. I’ll get them done. Go eat and quit pestering. God, sometimes I think the old man is right. You are a nag.
